Different energy sources supply us with the power we require to live and work. These include wind, solar geothermal, biomass, and geothermal sources. In addition to being an important source of electricity, these sources can also be used for transportation and heating. The biggest issue with these sources of energy is that they can create greenhouse gas emissions when burned to produce electricity. This means that there is a need for renewable energy sources that are more sustainable.
The most popular type of energy is fossil fuels, comprised of coal oil, natural gas. They were created millions of year ago when prehistoric animals and plants passed away and were buried under layers of sedimentary rocks. When the conditions were right these fossil fuels gradually transformed into carbon-rich substances which, when burned generate energy. These fossil fuels are not renewable as they will run out in our lifetimes or even in many lifetimes.
Renewable energy sources are, however are constantly replenished. The sun is the main source of renewable energy, since it supplies heat and light. It is used to power our homes and businesses as well to drive vehicles. Wind is another renewable energy source that produces electricity by spinning turbines. Since the first people discovered how to harness the wind in the past, we have been using it for millennia. Finally, we use biological processes to create ethanol (a clear alcohol that can be used as a fuel) from crops and waste.
Hydropower is the largest renewable energy source in the US, but wind and biofuels will soon surpass it. Hydropower is based on nature’s water cycle to harness the power of fast-flowing water, which is then used to generate electricity.
